As micromobility adoption rises, the partnership will ensure end-of-life e-bike and e-scooter batteries are responsibly recycled

Call2Recycle Canada, a national not-for-profit battery recycling organization, is partnering with micromobility provider, Lime, to recover and recycle batteries from Lime’s fleet of e-bikes and e-scooters across Canada.

The partnership addresses a growing challenge: as micromobility options gain popularity nationwide, the number of batteries reaching the end-of-life is also rising.

Ensuring those batteries are safely managed and their materials recovered is becoming critical to the sector.

“At Lime, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. We are excited to partner with Call2Recycle Canada to recycle our end-of-life batteries in a responsible way, ensuring valuable materials are recovered and can be reintroduced into the supply chain,” says Andrew Savage, head of sustainability at Lime, in a press statement.

“Together, we’re working to chart a new direction for sustainable and responsible e-mobility growth in Canada.”

Lime has made circularity a central part of its business strategy. The shared micromobility company has set a target to reach net zero by 2030 and has already cut its emissions intensity by 66.8 per cent since adopting the goal.

Lime currently operates in 14 cities across Canada. Partnering with Call2Recycle, Lime says, strengthens its efforts to advance Canada’s clean transportation future.

Expanding battery recycling

For Call2Recycle, the Lime collaboration adds to nearly three decades of battery recycling experience. The organization has safely collected and recycled more than 55 million kilograms of batteries in its history, so far.

As part of the partnership, retired batteries from Lime’s Canadian fleet will be accepted through Call2Recycle’s national collection network and taken to approved facilities. From there, the batteries will be processed and their valuable materials recovered.

“This partnership highlights Call2Recycle’s dedication to developing the proper infrastructure and collaborations to support Canada’s e-transport revolution,” says Joseph Chung, VP of account management at Call2Recycle Canada.

As demand for e-mobility continues to climb, Call2Recycle is expanding programs and partnerships to provide safe, accessible recycling options across the country. The organization views its partnership with Lime as another milestone on the path toward a circular economy and a more sustainable future.

“By working with Lime, we ensure that batteries which no longer have a useful life in mobility are collected and recycled responsibly, safeguarding both people and the environment,” Chung added.
