The Canadian government has set a series of increasing sales targets for zero-emission vehicle adoption across the country.
By 2026: 20 per cent new passenger vehicle sales will be ZEVs.
By 2030: 60 per cent new passenger vehicle sales will be ZEVs.
Finally, by 2035: 100 per cent new passenger vehicle sales will be ZEVs.
The targets are built into the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, which is designed to encourage automakers to send a greater supply of EVs to the Canadian market.
In the first quarter of 2024, new EV registrations Canada were 12.5 per cent. And British Columbia and Quebec are the leading adoption jurisdictions.
There is still a ways to go to meet the 2026 goal.
To encourage and hasten the transition to ZEVs, the federal government and most provinces and territories offer purchase and leasing incentives or rebates for many light-duty electric passenger vehicles.
