The Ioniq 6 electric sedan, a larger follow-up to the Ioniq 5, is rebate-eligible, features ultra-fast charging and impressive battery range

The just-announced base price for the Hyundai Canada Ioniq 6 is set at $54,999, with all three models of the new electric sedan eligible for government rebates.

Hyundai says the sleek sedan, which was first unveiled in Canada at the Montreal auto show in January, will arrive at Canadian dealers starting this spring.

All three versions of the Ioniq 6 have the same 77.4-kWh, 800-volt battery system capable of charging at speeds of up to 350 kW — the same ultra-fast capacity present in the previously released Ioniq 5. At maximum, Hyundai Canada says, this means the battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in as little as 18 minutes.

Impressive range

The base model, the Ioniq 6 Preferred RWD Long Range, has 18-inch wheels, a single rear motor and an impressive estimated range (per Natural Resources Canada estimate) of 581 kilometres. That’s 100 kilometres more than the Ioniq 5.

The Ioniq 6 Preferred AWD Long Range, with dual motors front and rear, is priced at $57,999 and has an estimated range of 509 km.

A third model, the Preferred AWD Long Range with Ultimate Package, with 20-inch wheels, is priced at $63,999 and has an estimated range of 435 km.

In rear-drive, single-motor mode, the Ioniq 6 delivers 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version packs considerably more punch: 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque, capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds.

Over-the-air update capability

On the inside, the driver display includes a pair of 12.3-inch screens. Functionality includes a full package of collision warning, lane assist, drive assist and cruise control features. It comes with battery pre-heater and charge prep. It is also the first Hyundai with over-the-air update capability.

The company is also touting its extensive use of eco-friendly materials in its interior, including recycled PET bottles and fishing nets, plant-base plastic yarns, as well as eco-processed leather and bio paint, each with plant-based extracts.

The Hyundai Canada Ioniq 6 is the second Hyundai model based on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform and is part of the company’s plan to introduce 17 battery electric vehicles by 2030.
